I missed this when it originally dropped, and being that I’ve never really been able to get into Das Racist (other than Heems’ solo tape) I probably would have passed on affiliate Big Baby Gandhi’s new mixtape had it not been for his appearance on Children Of The Night’s ‘Ellis (12.06am)’ which was one of my favourite cuts from their Queens…Revisited tape. I’m definitely pleased that I did, because Big Baby Gandhi’s tape which probably falls somewhere between his Das Racist cohorts and Danny Brown is another great (if somewhat left-field) example of the New York rap resurgence…

This week’s ‘Throwback Sundays’ see’s DJ Jed 104 take a look at some tracks by one of his favourite West coast groups, Tha Alkaholiks, and their Likwit family…
Tha Alkaholiks (later renamed to Tha Liks) are producer E-Swift and rappers J-Ro and Tash. My introduction to them was their debut album “21 & Over” (1993) which I had on heavy rotation for ages. Anyhow, these guys struck me as having a unique sound when I heard them. They weren’t like all the other crews jumping on the G-funk bandwagon and their LP had plenty of funky tracks you could party to whilst still having a credible edge to them. Since ’21 and Over’ their albums didn’t make any massive waves but regardless of sales figures they did put out some dope tracks and they remain one of my all time favourite rap groups. Here’s a selection to make your Sunday a better place, and don’t you dare sleep on the bonus section with some classic material from Likwit affiliates.
Tha Alkaholiks – Make Room
It was this track that made me buy the LP, classic no doubt.
Tha Alkaholiks ft O.D.B. – Hip Hop Drunkies
Another classic from tha Liks alongside the Wu’s Old Dirty Bastard (RIP) who raps about how ni***z be creepin’ up his beanstalk.
Tha Alkaholiks ft Diamond – The Next Level
Production and raps from DITC’s Diamond, this track knocks hard and I can’t get enough of it.
Tha Alkaholiks ft Xzibit – Killin’ it
Xzibit and the Liks over an ill beat by none other than Madlib. Gotta love this.
Bonus Section – Likwit Connection
Defari – Say it Twice
King Tee – Bass (12″ version)
Xzibit – Paparazzi
