When I first heard “DOPE” I knew we had to capture the vibe that THURZ and producer THX had created. I found the song to be very addictive, so it was an obvious decision to create a visual trick that was hard to turn your eyes away from. Given the songs almost chant like manner, the plan was to use the trick repetitiously, but in as many inventive and exciting ways as possible.
Despite the videos sleek presentation, I wanted the shooting process to be spontaneous and rough around the edges, which meant getting back to the personal experience I felt when I started filmmaking in high school, when it was just me and a camera.
My hope is that people will enjoy the video just as much as I have, which means watching it multiple times in a row!
