TiRon (HipHopFiend Interview)
Jan 2011 26

Last year saw the release of “MSTRD” the debut album of L.A. based (Chicago born) rapper TiRon. For an artist who only released 10 songs in the year he managed to build an incredible buzz, the project was very finely crafted, incredibly well thought out and completely cohesive. With all the recent talk of the “New West,” TiRon is set to blow up in 2011, and with his talent and grounded personality it is clear that he is an artist who will out live the hype.

I caught up with TiRon via Skype while he was in the process of recording his new collaborative project with Ayomari, entitled “Sucker For Pumps.”

How would you describe the music that you make?

Life narratives. Like instead of necessarily doing narratives on the club, or narratives on the street, it’s more like a narrative of life, you know, different things that people go through that nobody really touches on, in either a comical way or a realistic way; really talking about my life and the things I go through in a narrative.

Your previous two projects were entitled “Ketchup” (mixtape) and “MSTRD” (album,) why the interest in condiments?

Well “Ketchup” was more like I wanted people to get caught up to all of the stuff I’ve been doing. Because I had been doing records, like I did a song with Pac Div called “Paper,” I did something with Blu, I’d done a whole bunch of records that like the blogs were putting out, and I’d been putting on mixtapes and stuff like that. But nobody was really paying attention to them, so I was like; ok, I’ve done all of this work, but because it’s not all on one project nobody’s listening to it? So I was like; ok, let me just take all of these songs that I’ve done with other people and put them on the same project and I’ll call it “Ketchup” just to get everybody caught up to it. Then as soon as I did that everybody was like, “Oh, is there going to be a mustard?” like joking; so I was like fuck it maybe I will do a mustard.

So I ended up doing a mustard; “MSTRD.” And it was more like the “Ketchup” is the catchy stuff, it’s the stuff that’s easiest to get, easiest to digest; everybody likes ketchup. Mustard is a little more savoury, you can’t use a lot of mustard, but you can use a lot of ketchup, like you can just drown your french fries with ketchup. But you can’t really do that with mustard, so that’s why “MSTRD” is only ten songs long, but it’s hearty. It’s just a running gag that kept going then before I dropped “MSTRD” (Ayomari) dropped “PB&J Solutions,” and we were just like fuck it lets just do this Cafeteria Line shit.

Do you plan to take the joke any further with new projects?

Well no, the joke isn’t going to continue; the joke was more like the hook, or the catch. We’re actually going to start going in, like more serious. The condiments thing was more just to get people ready for the meals, like you don’t eat ketchup by itself, you eat it with something, you don’t eat mustard by itself, you eat it with something; they’re things that help your pallet understand the meal that you’re eating. Like ketchup compliments the flavour in a hot dog, which is why they do that, same thing with mustard. Same thing with both of those projects that I’ve dropped; they’re ways for you to understand what I’ve been working on, and prepare you for the meal. So like, we’re working on “Sucker For Pumps” which is the collaborative project between myself and Ayomari, and the whole project is all about women and for girls and for women. But dudes can relate to it as well, because we’re men.

So would you describe it as a concept album?

Yeah it is a concept album. It’s actually a very light concept, we just wanted to do an honest project for women; not necessarily where every song is the nicest song, not necessarily where every song is the meanest song, or the song that makes the women dance, but just something that women can listen to, and be like “you know what I respect and appreciate what they’re doing and what they say about us.” It’s just about the relationships between men and women, and how men and women aren’t men and women anymore, like the role reversal and all that craziness.

Are any of the recent songs you’ve put out together going to be included on it?

Nah, we actually did a song last night, and we were so hyped off of it that we were like; “Aww, lets leak it, lets leak it, lets leak it, lets put it out right now!” Then it became “Oh well lets just leak a snippet, lets leak a snippet.” But then we were like “Oh, we’ll actually hold on to it and do it right this time,” no more sneak peaks and all of that.

So when do you plan on releasing that project?

Well we’re shooting for Valentine’s day; so fairly soon.

Shooting for Valentine’s day, but it depends on how many we get deep, we are currently we have a couple of records, but we still have to finalise artwork and all that kind of stuff, and that might take longer than a couple of weeks.

How many tracks are you planning to do for it?

That’ll be 10 songs, maximum that’ll be 10 songs.

A while ago you released the acappellas from “MSTRD” and are now running a remix competition for producers, what made you decide to do this?

It actually came from like, I was listening to a lot of the acappellas, because a DJ friend of mine was like, “You know what, I really want to remix one of the songs so I can see what my beats sound like over your lyrics, if you can give me the session files for that so I could tinker around with it.” So I went through all of the sessions and muted all of the beats, and I was just listening to them and I was like, I wonder if people know that that’s me singing, and that’s me doing the ad-libs in the background, I wonder if people know how much work I put into these songs, or if people think I really just got on it and rapped. So then I was like, you know what let me just release the acappellas and see what happens. I released the acappellas, and then people just started doing their own remixes and sending them over to me like, “Yo listen to what I did,” and there were so many that I was like, you know what we should do a competition, just a friendly competition. I mean obviously we are going to send out prizes and gifts and things to those that we really really enjoy, but it’s just a tool for producers and up and coming producers get their practice, because a lot of producers make beats and try and make music but they never really hone in to the notation and know how to produce for an individual.

Do you produce your own work?

I guess that’s debatable in terms of what you think of a producer, but in terms of the beats, I don’t make the beats, but in terms of the record I do produce the record. I do determine how long verses are, I do determine what the hook is going to sound like, what sound effects go in it, I do mix and engineer and those kind of things. We engineer our own sessions, so I do produce the final product, but as far as the beat, no, I don’t make beats.

A lot of the media are talking about the “New West” which many consider you a part of. What do you think about this?

I don’t buy into it, specifically because that’s hype right now. And hype can die out, and most times it does die out, the hype with anything. I don’t see it as a movement. I just see it as, you guys are just now finally seeing what we’ve been doing for years, but it’s just that everybody kind of gave up on the West Coast because of the whole East coast/West coast thing that the media dreamt up, and they kind of just forgot about us. And in most cases a lot of the industry forgot about us, so once we started just saying, “you know what we are just going to just do what we do, and keep doing it, doing it hard.” And obviously people opened that door like the Bleu Collar, and Pac Div, U-N-I, Dom Kennedy, myself, we just said, “fuck the industry,” and lets go for it. But I appreciate anybody who might look at me as the New West, but I just look at it as a lot of people all in the same area that just happen to make great music.

How did you view 2010 as a year for music, outside of your own?

Well to be honest I thought a lot of the music in 2010 was really lot of hype. I think you know, all respect due to Eminem, but I really didn’t like his album too much, but it got nominated for 10 Grammies and it was hyped up when it came out. Same with Kanye West’s album, I really wasn’t in love with it like everybody else seems to be, and it just seems like the potential, or you know when you really want something and you hear it’s coming out and you’re just like “It’s gonna be this, it’s gonna be that,” and when it comes out you buy into your own hype that you’ve set up yourself. So you’re automatically like, “oh yeah this is the new…” I really enjoyed Vampire Weekend’s album “Contra” that came out early in the year last year. I enjoyed a lot of the chillwave stuff like from Washed Out… I liked Big K.R.I.T’s project, that was tight, I liked Yelawolf, I liked Dom Kennedy’s project, I liked a few things. But my list would be very small for the top of 2010. Because nothing really pushed it, nothing really said anything; there was nothing really definitive that came out. Like even Kanye, I didn’t learn anything new about Kanye from this new project, it was the same thing that he’d been doing. Same with Eminem, I learned maybe that he got over his addiction, but I really didn’t learn anything musically from it, whereas Vampire Weekend was like insane to me.

What made you pursue hip-hop as a medium for expression?

I think the opportunity just presented itself and I took it, I mean I’m pretty sure if that avenue had opened itself in any other genre be it film or painting or whatever I’m pretty I would have done that. I’m a very expressive person, I talk a lot, I really want to connect with people, and I want people to connect with me, and understand what I’m saying. I think that’s what we as humans want more than anything when we leave this earth, we want to feel that people got us, that people understood us, and it just so happened that hip-hop just happened to be that for me. It just worked out I guess, I don’t know…

What music influenced you when you were growing up?

I just knew that I always wanted to do music. I never knew that I wanted to do hip-hop music. When I first started writing I always wanted to be like Stevie Wonder, I always wanted to be like Steely Dan and Michael McDonald and Anita Baker and all of these other artists that my mother was listening to. Then I got a little older, like maybe 8 or 9 years old, and then Brandy came out, the singer, and like I was in love with her, I’m still in love with Brandy to this day! And then I was like, ok, I want to be an RnB singer, so I started writing RnB. Because my Uncle, he’s a blues musician so I’d always kind of grown up around music, because I grew up in his house, so I’ve always wanted to make music because I guess I was just raised around it.

Are you working on any new solo material?

The only thing we have planned right now is a project I’m doing called “No Sleep Til Slauson” which will probably be available… we’ll probably put that out in summer, but we’ll see how that goes because we’ve still got to finish the “#goronniesessions,” and Ayomari’s project “Color,” and obviously the collaboration project as well as a compilation we’re doing with the Cafeteria Line, and then my project will come out. So it’s kind of like we’re pushing my project back a little, so people can see me working in different avenues, and then when I think I’m ready and I think everyone else is ready then I’ll give that project out.

What are the “#goronniesessions?”

The “#goronniesessions” are songs that aren’t necessarily going to be for anything, they are songs that we do on the spot, and release on the spot. If you Google the “#goronniesessions” when they come up, every single one of those songs, I think there are like 4 songs that we’ve released so far, but everytime we release a song it’s literally right after we finished recording it, so the day we put it out is the day we recorded it.

A lot of people were saying “TiRon you’re not putting out enough music, you only put out ten songs last year, you can’t expect your fans to be satisfied with ten songs in a year.” So I was like ok, people want to see how fast I work, so lets just show them the process lets show them the creative process. So a lot of the records that are on the “#goronniesessions” would have never made my album or Omari’s album or our collaborative, so we were ok lets just show people, not necessarily our throwaways, but lets show people our process, so they’re our sessions.

Are you planning to collect them, or will it just be something you continue to add to?

Well as of right now we are constantly adding to it, but eventually we will just put it all on one project and put it out. that way people can just have it all in one because it’s easier for people to digest information like that when its all in one, but as of right now we’re kind of just throwing them all around.

So the winner of the remix competition gets to be a part of the “#goronniesessions”?

Yeah, like whatever producer wins we’ll just work with that producer, and they’ll be part of the “#goronniesessions” and we will just work with them to help them in getting their chops up and work with other artists, because I feel like I have knowledge to share, just like I feel like I have something to learn. So it would just be somebody else that we can work with and then put stuff out, because you know, maybe if I put something out, my name might mean a little bit, so somebody might check it out and be like, “who’s this producer?” So it’s just a way to help get our fans and work-a-holics like ourselves exposure.

How has the response to the competition been? Have you had many submissions?

A whole lot! Like, people have released whole projects with covers and artwork and all types of stuff, some really terrible, and some good. So, you know, you’ve got to take the good with the bad.

What do you hope to gain from 2011, as an artist?

A lot of experience, a lot of knowledge, a lot of music, a lot of respect and a lot of money.
