An Introduction to Lyriciss96

So this one time in band camp…oh, hey, how y’all doing? All well? Good to hear. If y’all aren’t hip to who I am, the name’s Lyriciss. Your friendly neighborhood rhyme-flipper, known for punching through school buses (word to Sean Price) and stomping out pandas, from DC to anywhere I go. I’m an artist on Inner Loop Records, plus a member of such affiliations as The Write Brothers (with Pro’Verb), Zzz Gang (me, Pro’Verb, AP The Prince, RAtheMC, Chris Barz, & KT), and Lunchroom Champions (me, Young Scolla, D. Julien, & Dee Goodz). As I sit down after spending the last day and night in a 7-hour studio session, then in the COLD-ASS (yes, “cold-ass” needed to be capitalized) city supporting the homie Pro’Verb at his Grind Time Now DMV battle (peace to Paradoxx, Maestro, Poison Pen, and Philly Swain for the love…I still ain’t battlin’ though! LOL), I sit here on this mini-PC wondering what to say to y’all that’d be super interesting and sound rapper-rapper-ish, but if you know me, you know I’m much more than just a guy who raps.
Lyriciss – Hot Music [VIDEO]
This is supposed to chronicle the life and times of an up-and-coming artist making moves in this hip-hop game, but it gets a little deeper than that for me. I’m 22, with a child, and living in an area that still hasn’t fully embraced its own hip-hop scene (people literally will spend $60 to go hear a go-go band but won’t spend $5 to support a rapper’s mixtape or album). Add to that, I do a majority of the work in my career myself at this point, so my story’s not quite as glamorous as the artist touring and crowd-diving every night, while smashing groupies and smoking weed after the shows. I literally do NONE of that shit. I wake up, check my emails, send off any info I need, then hit the social networks (Facebook, Twitter, & Tumblr) from my BlackBerry all day while I perform any offline tasks I gotta handle, such as studio sessions, doing shows (which I do a LOT of…lawd), photoshoots, videoshoots, meetings, or anything non-business after that point.

The point of saying that is, being an indie artist is a lot of hard work, because all of those things I mentioned, I usually had to set those up too. It’s not like a major-label situation where they just throw the money out there to get it done. That’s not to say this music shit isn’t great though. At the end of the day, I’m living my dreams. I’ve performed at Rock The Bells, Hustlepalooza, & Sneaker Pimps. I’m in talks to hit London and Japan next year. I’m on international mixtapes. I’ve been posted on some of the biggest hip-hop websites on the net. Most importantly, I connect with true fans and supporters. That’s amazing to know that people will literally travel from out of town to come to a show and see me rock. 3 years ago, I was unknown, in the DMV-region and otherwise, and I just kept working to get where I am now. No handouts, no cosigns, just hard work and good music. I give that advice to any new artist…make your own rules and make good music. Everything else will work out…never chase this industry. Oh yeah…and never drink the red punch or fall asleep with your shoes on. Oh wait, that’s the rules to something completely different. Either way, stay focused and you’ll be aight. Just look at me…you can trust a guy who punches through school buses, right? By the way, this blog is pretty much my intro blog…I’ll be back with more current shit next time…with video to accompany it, maybe? Hmm…time to get my JoeBuddenTV on…
