Through College and University, my interest in Hip-Hop was solidified by my involvement in B-Boying. I spent the best part of four years trying to express myself through dancing in University basements, dining halls, community centres and unused nightclubs; I was never the best dancer, and I never expected to be, but I had fun and found my identity as well as gaining a lot of close friends.

It is for these reasons that I hate seeing films like “Step-Up” and “You Got Served”, and average dancers who gain commercial recognition on TV talent shows purely because audiences are uneducated and ignorant of Hip-Hop dance styles.

I have therefore decided that being a blog about “Hip-Hop” I will not leave the dance behind, and want to help to inform people about what Hip-Hop dance styles are, what is good, what is bad, the history etc.

In order to do this I have asked the UK and France’s B-Boy Flo (a good friend of mine and one of the UK’s best B-Boys) to submit a video with a brief explanation every so often, in order to help educate people who are interested in learning about this area of the culture…

Breaking also knows as bboying or breakdancing (media term) was born in the early 70′s in the Bronx.
A perfect illustration of what breaking should look like can be seen in this video. Here we have former member (and vice president) of the Rock Steady Crew, KEN SWIFT. Now President of VII Gems, he is still considered “the Epitome of a B-Boy”.

Nowadays, the breaking scene is very strong with people breaking and competing all over the world: from Russia to Chile to Korea.

Stay tuned for more…

If you have specific questions or would like information on a certain style of dance, please comment below and I’ll get them to Flo to answer.
